Why Waste a Good Thing?

Recycle. It's Not Garbage Anymore!

A new City of Seattle ordinance prohibits recyclable paper, cardboard and yard waste in commercial garbage. The ordinance is designed to increase Seattle's recycling rate, conserve resources and lower the cost of doing business.

Starting January 1, 2005, commercial customers whose garbage contains more than 10% paper, cardboard, or yard waste may receive a notice from City inspectors reminding them about the new recycling requirements. Starting in 2006, businesses whose garbage contains more than 10% recyclables may be fined by City inspectors.

As a service of the City of Seattle, Allied Waste Services, Seattle offers a Commercial Recycling Program for Seattle Commercial Garbage Customers:

  • Up to two 96-gallon mixed recycling carts are provided at no additional charge for businesses currently signed up for garbage service in the City of Seattle.
  • Recycling carts are emptied every other week.
  • Recycling service includes paper, cardboard, cans and bottles
